August 1975, 25-year-old Michael Smith was fee. After years in trouble, in and out of approved schools, he was now an adult.
Smith met a girl, but the relationship was strained from the outset, Smith went on to strangled his girlfriend, 19-year-old Sheila Deakin over an argument about another man.
Smith was sentenced to life imprisonment.

26th August 2005, Smith was released from prison after serving nearly 29 years of his life sentence, he moved into a bail hostel in Stafford.

14th - 16th August 2006, Smith met Peter Summers through a drug contact. Summers was a heroin addict, living in Squires View, Stoke, Peter Summers partner had a large amount of cash in the loft in the flat, around £8,000, this was enough for Smith to murder his friend.

Smith battered Peter Summers to death with a champagne bottle, causing massive head injuries. He then left the man dying in the flat, and stole the money from the loft.
The murder was only discovered four days later when Summers mother raised concerns over the whereabouts of her son.

18th August 2006, Smith took his girlfriend on a shopping spree, she later reported he was jittery, and told her he was in big trouble.

25th August 2006  Smith gave himself up to police.

16th May 2007, Smith given a 'Whole Life tariff' by Judge Mr Justice Nelson at Stafford Crown court. This means he will never be released, and is on the home office list of those who will die in prison, see list here >>
