Sunday 17th April 2011, 38-year-old Barnes and hiss girlfriend met Christopher Clowes, aged 40, and his girlfriend in a pub beer garden, they got talking and a friendship developed. Barnes invited the couple back to his house to continue drinking. While the women were chatting in one room they could hear the men in the other room having an argument. This resulted in blows being thrown, Mr Clowes left the house but was followed by Barnes who stabbed him in the chest with a kitchen knife, Barnes then walked off, while Clowes tried to walk away.
Barnes came back and stabbed him once more in the chest, this time with such force that the blade broke off.
Monday 5th December 2011, Barnes stood trial for murder at Nottingham Crown Court, Barnes, denied murder but admitted manslaughter, telling the court he could not remember the incident at all. He said: "I feel terrible. I try to remember it every minute of every day. I have nightmares about it."
Friday 9th December 2011, Barnes was found guilty by a jury at Nottingham Crown court, they took just two hours to find him guilty of murder.
The judge sentenced him to life, with a minimum term of 22 years.
