Elias Torr was a farmer with a violent addiction to drink, and his family were constantly afraid of him. They lived in a farmhouse beside the main Nottingham to Melton railway line. At the end of April 1899 there was a fierce family quarrel after which his wife and daughter went to stay with a neighbouring farmer.
Torr went to the farm to try and calm his family but was refused entry. In a mad rage. he broke the door down with the butt of his gun and as his family fled through a back door, he opened fire and fatally wounded his daughter Margaret.
Torr was convicted at Nottingham Assizes of the murder of his eldest daughter. Margaret Ann who was 21 years old,
9th August 1899, Toor was hanged by James and William Billington at Nottingham prison, he was 52-years-old.
