FACTFILE

21st January 1809, Men working in a field noticed something odd and dark on the snow on the far side of the field, they approached and saw blood in the snow, then a body.

The man had had his throat cut from ear to ear, and also been stabbed in the side. One of the labourers was able to identify the victim as Mr James Crick who lived only a short distance away.

They also noticed footprints in the snow, two sets, they followed the footprints which led them to Mr. Cricks house.

They were too scared to enter and sent one of the lads to the next nearest farm in Marston for help, they waited outside.

When help arrived they went into the house and found the body of the Housekeeper, Rebecca Read at the top of the stairs, her throat had also been cut.

On looking around they noticed all drawers and cupboards had been gone through.

Thee local descended on the scene destroying possible evidence, also covering up the chance of following footprints in the snow. The next day it snowed again, thus removing any chance of finding the culprit.
