Chapman, a registered sex
offender had a history of sex attacks and violence. In
1996 He was jailed for raping two prostitutes at
knifepoint, and was sentenced to seven years'
imprisonment, he was released in 2001.
Posing as 19 year old Peter
Cartwright on the social networking website "Facebook"
he communicated with 19 year old Ashleigh, as well as
many other young girls. He claimed to be a 17 year old
labourer and DJ from Stockton, and posted a picture of a
young bare chested man.
Sunday 25th October 2009,
Chapman and the 17 year old Ashleigh arranged to meet
up. She told her mother she was going to stay with
friends. He kidnapped her, then raped and murdered her,
dumping her body in a farmers field near Sedgefield.
A nationwide search for the
car led police to Chapman, who initially denied all
charges
Monday 8th March 2010,
Chapman pleaded guilty to the charges of rape,
kidnap and murder at Teesside Crown Court. He also
admitted failing to tell police of a change of address,
as required by the sex offenders register.
Chapman was jailed for
fife, with the judge saying he should serve a minimum 35
years behind bars.
