7th December 2008, Neil McNulty was out
celebrating a friends birthday, they had many drinks
before attempting to get into the Queen Ann pub.
They were refused entry by door staff at the town's
Queen Anne pub, McNulty then hurled a bottle through the
pub door.
A shard of glass flew into the neck of 27 year old
barmaid Emma O'Kane. Emma was on a night off and was out
celebrating her boyfriends birthday, Michael Shepherd,
tried to save Emma's life but she bled to death.
28th December 2008,McNulty
arrested and charged with the murder of Emma O'Kane.
Monday 29yth December
2008, Neil McNulty, 19, of Peel Lane, Heywood, was
remanded in custody at Rochdale Magistrates' Court.
He was due to appear before Manchester Crown Court in
spring 2009.
Tuesday, 17 March 2009,
Neil McNulty admitted the manslaughter of a
mother-of-three who died when he threw a bottle into a
crowded pub after being refused entry. McNulty was told
he faced an "inevitable" custodial sentence.
The Crown Prosecution
Service (CPS) accepted his plea of not guilty to murder
on the grounds that there was no realistic prospect of
securing a conviction on the charge.
Tuesday 7th April 2009,
McNulty sentenced to four and a half years, 99 days to
be deducted as he has served this on remand.
