Sunday 29th June 2008,
The bodies of Laurent Bonomo aged-23, and Gabriel Ferez
also aged-23, were found in a ground floor flat in the New
Cross area of south-east London. The emergency services
attended in Sterling Gardens after local residents reported
hearing an explosion just after 11pm. The flat was ablaze
and the front windows had been blown out.
Mr Bonomo had 197
stab wounds, 100 of which were in his back. Mr Ferez had
been stabbed 47 times. Flammable liquid was then poured
over their bodies before they died. They were then set on
fire, police believe they died before the fire started.
Sunday 6th July 2008,
Police released an E-fit of a man seen running away
from the scene of the murders. This had been reported by a
neighbour. Describing him as white,
aged 30 to 40 and slim. He was wearing a light-coloured
baseball cap, dark top, blue jeans and white trainers.
Monday 7th July 2008,
A 33-year-old man walked into a south London police
station and handed himself in, in connection with the
double murder. While at the police station he was
continually rubbing cream into his hands and face, he
was taken to hospital suffering from severe burns.
Wednesday 9th July 2008,
Unemployed Nigel Farmer aged 33, of no fixed address, was
charged with murder.
He also faced charges of arson and attempting to
pervert the course of justice when he appears before
Greenwich Magistrates Court.
Police studying CCTV from
the area detected a known local offender, one Danno
Sonnex who had spent virtually all his adult life in
prison.
21st November 2008,
Nigel Edwards Farmer, 33, of no fixed address, and Danno
Sonnex, 23, from Peckham, south London, denied murder,
arson, burglary and false imprisonment.
They were remanded in custody by an Old Bailey court
until April 2009.
22nd April 2009,
Jury sworn in for the trial at the old Bailey.
Sonnex must serve a
minimum of 40 years. Farmer was told he must stay in
prison for a minimum of 35 years.
In April 2008
magistrates had granted Sonnex bail on charges of
handling stolen goods. He was supposed to be recalled to
prison to serve the remainder of an earlier sentence but
the paperwork was not ready and he walked free from
court.
In May 2002, when Sonnex
was 16, he stabbed another youth, Ersan Topcu, in a row
over a car, and in September of that year, took part in
a spate of robberies with a friend.
Sonnex comes from a
family with a history of crime and violence.
His brother, Bernie Junior, has served 10 separate
prison sentences, his father, Bernie Senior, has been
convicted of 47 offences, including gun and drug
offences, and has served six jail sentences. His sister,
Louise, is currently in jail after being convicted of
wounding and causing grievous bodily harm.
