10th September 2011, Petrol was poured through the
letterbox of the Chatham Hill house. Danai Muhammadi was
in a relationship with Miss Crook, this had broken down,
full of spite and encouraged by Farhad and Ms Smith he
poured petrol, using a garden spray bottle through the
letterbox in the middle of the night while the family
In the house were Noah the
15-month old son of the couple, his estranged partner
Melissa Crook, her father Mark, as well as her mother
50-year-old Amando and the brother Bohdan.
Te mother and brother escaped
with their lives but the others perished in the fire.
December 2011, Danai Muhammadi, the father of the
dead baby, and estranged husband of Ms Crook was charged
with,. but denied 3 counts of murder and 2 attempted
Farhad Mahmud and his girlfriend, Emma Smith were also
charged with 3 counts of murder and 2 of attempted
murder, they deny all charges.
31st May 2012, Jury retires to consider verdicts.
June 2012, Both Muhammadi and Mahmud are found guilty,
while Ms Smith was found not guilty of murder, but
guilty of manslaughter.
2nd July 2012, At
sentencing Danai Muhammadi was given a life sentence
with a minimum tariff of 38 years, his friend and
accomplice, Farhad Mahmud must serve a minimum term of
34 years. Emma Smith was sentenced to 14 years i prison.
The judge said "The
sentences given today reflect the severity of the
charges and I hope that the Crook family can now move on
with their lives.
"They have been torn apart and will forever have to live
with the consequences of the selfish actions of others."
